After accepting the head coaching job at Colorado, Deion Sanders wasn’t just recruiting players out of the NCAA transfer portal to join him in Boulder, CO. The legendary NFL defensive back turned college head coach brought in a former NFL head coach to work with his offense in Pat Shurmur.

The long-time NFL coach recently revealed why he accepted the opportunity to team up with Sanders at Colorado.

“Well, I believe in Coach Prime; I believe in him as a man,” said Shurmur. “I remember him first certainly as a player. I was coaching in the league when he was playing. He’s one of the best players of all time in that game. I believe in his competitive spirit and when I was given an opportunity to come work with him. I jumped at it.”

Shurmer is a long-time coach with 32 years of skin in the game. However, this is not his first time at the collegiate level, as he spent his first 11 years coaching at Michigan State and a lone season at Stanford. Over his 21-year NFL coaching career, Shurmur has had two head coaching stops with the Cleveland Browns 2011-2012 and the New York Giants 2018-2019. He has also been a part of eight playoff teams, six division titles and has a Super Bowl appearance to his name as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004.

Deion Sanders expects to win at Colorado

The Buffaloes headman recently addressed the media too, but about his expectations for 2023. In his first season at Colorado, Sanders knows that there’s going to be a lot of attention on the Buffaloes. Despite that attention, not many people expect a lot on the field from Colorado in Sanders’ first season owing to the size of the rebuild. Still, Sanders expects to win.

As Fall Camp gets started, Sanders was asked about his expectations for year one at Colorado and he explained that winning is the standard.

“To win, to win,” Deion Sanders said. “To win, develop, get these guys to the next level, and help them to be men, not boys.”

“That’s my expectation and we’re going to eclipse that. We’re going to win. We’re going to win. We’re going to win. I don’t know how to say that, wish I could say it in several different languages, but we’re going to win.”
