Colorado and Stanford were tied at 43 in double overtime Friday night when Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders made a critical mistake.

On third-and-goal from the 2, Sanders took the snap and tried to find an open receiver. He continued to backpedal waiting for someone to break free and eventually threw a pass up for grabs that was intended for two-way star Travis Hunter.

Instead, the pass was intercepted by Alaka’i Gilman, and Stanford kicked a field goal moments later to secure the win.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, who is the father of Shedeur Sanders, spoke after the game about Shedeur’s decision and costly turnover in double overtime.

“First of all, he should’ve never thrown the ball. He should’ve never thrown the ball,” Deion Sanders said. “Just give us another down, let’s kick the field goal. Stay in it.”

There was no one open on the play, due in part to a pair of Colorado receivers running into each other during a crossing route. Still, Deion Sanders said Shedeur Sanders should’ve thrown the ball away instead of forcing it into traffic.

“I don’t know if they played it on a replay to show what happened with the receivers on that play,” Deion Sanders said. “Something happened on that play that shouldn’t have happened. He should’ve never thrown the ball, though.”

Deion Sanders shares how Colorado team will move forward from loss to Stanford

Deion Sanders was disappointed with his entire team after the loss to Stanford, not just Shedeur Sanders.

The loss dropped Colorado to 4-3 on the season and 1-3 in the Pac-12. To be bowl eligible, the Buffaloes need to earn two more wins.

Sanders kept the loss in perspective and revealed how his team moves forward after losing Friday night.

“We have no choice but to go forward, that’s life,” Sanders said. “This ain’t the only thing that’s going on in life. I mean all you guy’s dealing with something, you still moving, you still progressing, you still going forward, we got to do the same darn thing. We didn’t expect that. A lot of things that go on in life that are unexpected and this was one of them.

“We got to knuckle up and let’s go. We can’t sit down having a pity party. I don’t feel bad for us. Some all y’all ecstatic about what transpired today. And I know that, but let’s go. We’re gonna take this one on the chin because we deserve it.”
