Shedeur Sanders reveals mistake which led to highlight Travis Hunter touchdown
With 2:22 left in the fourth quarter against Utah on Saturday, Colorado got creative. The Buffaloes did a double-handoff in the backfield, putting the ball in wide receiver Travis Hunter‘s hands while quarterback Shedeur Sanders leaked out for a route.
However, Hunter isn’t the quarterback for a reason. Instead of throwing the ball, Hunter took off for the end zone when he felt pressure and split Utah’s defense to find a score. After the win, Sanders reflected on the highlight play.
“Just because he scored, I’m going to automatically be on the clip,” Sanders said. “If you didn’t watch me, because y’all was watching what he was doing, I was supposed to catch the ball, but then, I was taking kind of like what he does at receiver.
“He goes to somebody, he’s not open, he squares him up, then he pushes him a little bit and turns around, but I tripped. I tripped, and I fell backwards, and the DB landed on me. I was just thankful. I knew he was going to make the right decision in that situation, but that’s what I was worrying about. I was trying to get open. I see how hard it is to be a receiver.”
Sanders is doing just fine at his current position. In the 49-24 win, Sanders completed 30-of-his-41 pass attempts for 340 yards and three touchdowns while only throwing one interception.

The standout performance was nothing new for Shedeur Sanders, who boasts the sixth-most passing yards in the country this season and the third-highest completion percentage. Sanders’ confidence in his abilities allows him to have a sense of humor when he makes a mistake.
“I’m thinking about it, and it’s definitely gonna be on the bloopers because I fell backwards,” Sanders said. “But I feel that I could have ran a better route and got the ball better. But Travis, he made it happen with his scrambling ability. He watched me, by the way. He watched the film on iPads. He watched how I scrambled and he applied that to his game.”
Whatever Hunter and Sanders are doing, they need to keep doing it. With the win on Saturday, Colorado improved to 8-2 and 6-1 in conference play. BYU is the only other team with one loss in conference play. In other words, the Buffaloes are in excellent position to compete for the Big 12 crown.
On Saturday, Colorado will look to keep its momentum rolling as it squares off against Kansas at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on FOX.
