Colorado coach Tad Boyle states he is 'definitely coming back' for 2025-26

Tad Boyle is running it back at Colorado. Despite speculation about retirement, he told CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander he is “definitely coming back” in 2025-26.
Boyle, 62, is wrapping up his 15th season at Colorado. The return to the Big 12 has been a rough go for the Buffaloes, though, with just an 11-19 overall record and a 2-17 mark in conference play entering Saturday’s regular-season finale against TCU.
Amid the rough season, there were questions about whether Boyle would stay on as Colorado coach. His buyout sat at $10 million as of the end of the 2024 season, according to USA Today. However, it turns out he’s not ready to walk away yet.
With 309 wins in Boulder, Boyle is Colorado’s all-time winningest coach. He has also taken the program to six NCAA tournaments, which is also more than any other coach in history. The Buffaloes made it to the Round of 32 last year, which matched the farthest they’ve advanced under Boyle.
At 11-17 heading into Saturday’s final regular-season game, the Buffaloes are on track for their fewest wins under Tad Boyle’s leadership, falling below the 16 wins in 2014-15. That year, CU played in the CBI. But Boyle has high expectations for the program, even despite being picked 15th out of 16 teams in the Big 12 preseason poll this year. He summed up his thoughts on the state of the year earlier this week ahead of the season finale.

“My expectations are the same every year,” Boyle said, via the Denver Gazette’s Tyler King. “It’s not like I look at certain teams and say, ‘Oh, I expect these guys to win how many games.’ We expect to be in the top half of our league, we expect to be competing for a high seed in the conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament. Those expectations don’t change based on who we have. Some teams can meet those and some teams can’t. This team’s not come close to meeting them.”
After Saturday’s game, Colorado will turn its attention to the Big 12 Tournament next week in Kansas City. The Buffaloes will be the No. 16 seed in the field, sitting two games behind Arizona with one game to play. That will put Colorado’s tournament opener Tuesday afternoon against the No. 9 seed in the bracket.
Colorado and TCU will close out the regular season Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
