Travis Hunter explains why he won't change jersey number at Colorado
Travis Hunter and No. 12 are synonymous at this point. The Colorado defensive back said he won’t change his jersey number after transferring from Jackson State.
The former five-star recruit headlined the movement to Colorado to follow Deion Sanders from Jackson State. Sanders put together quite the recruiting class but didn’t change his attitude at Colorado.
He said all players had to earn their jersey numbers, which is why every player had a blank jersey at the start of spring practice.
“Yeah, I’m gonna stick with it, I gotta earn it,” Hunter said. “I had a career season in high school in that number so I just wanted to stick with it. I didn’t wanna follow nobody else in my family who stuck with their number.”
Hunter is not 100% healthy at the moment and he admitted as much this week.
“It was very difficult, because I came back early off an injury when I wasn’t supposed to, but I wanted to play as much as I can, so I just came in and did what I was supposed to do,” Hunter said. “Now I’m trying to get back up to 100% healthy so I can be able to play the best season of my college career right now.”

Colorado opens the season with TCU after the Horned Frogs just made it to the College Football Playoff National Championship. Hunter and the rest of the Buffaloes are solely focused on that first game.
“We got a lot of hype around us right now,” Hunter said. “So we got to go in and just attack every day … We got to play and practice every day like we’re going against TCU right now.”
As a member of the Class of 2022, Hunter was a five-star recruit out of Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the state, the No. 1 athlete in the class and the No. 2 overall prospect in the class.
