Travis Hunter playing his college football for Deion Sanders made plenty of sense for a two-way star, learning from someone who had done the same. And player paid tribute to a coach who helped lead him to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York City.

Hunter laid out his sky blue suit and accompanying white shoes in his hotel room on the floor and posted a picture of him looking at the outfit. It’s much akin to a photo of Sanders’ gear laid out on the locker room floor prior to a game for the San Francisco 49ers.

And it’s just another way the coach-player duo is similar.

And after Colorado’s regular-season finale, Sanders stumped for Hunter to win the Heisman.

“I think Travis clinched the Heisman,” Sanders said, before pausing and then starting up again. “Thank you God, for stopping me. Because I almost said something. I think Travis clinched the Heisman with his performance. I think he made a lot of people aware of how ignorant they was with the Thorpe. His performance today, what’d he have? Three touchdowns, 100 yards and an interception and two passes broken up. Should’ve had another pick. Hit him right in the darn chest. I’m not happy about that, but I’m happy with him. But it’s phenomenal.”

And for his part, Hunter was happy to silence the critics and said as much in a brief postgame interview with ESPN on the field.

“Me just playing football, man,” Hunter said to ESPN sideline reporter Quint Kessenich after a 52-0 win for the Buffaloes against Oklahoma State. “They say I can’t do it, I’m not a top receiver, so I had to show ’em.”

Hunter and the rest of the Heisman finalists will learn who wins the award and who leaves New York empty handed during the ceremony, which begins at 8 p.m. EST and will be aired on ESPN. Hunter is the current betting favorite to win the award.
