After a hot start to the season, things fizzled out in the second half of the season for Colorado football in Year 1 under Deion Sanders. But “Coach Prime” already has plenty of believers in the Buffaloes.

Those believers apparently include Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce, who shared his optimism for Year 2 under Sanders in Boulder. Asked for a prediction for the 2024 record for Colorado at Super Bowl media days, Kelce didn’t hold back.

“Undefeated,” Kelce said. “I’m taking Prime every single time. I’m not a betting man, but my money’s on Prime.”

After beginning the season 3-0 and sitting at 4-2 at the halfway point, Colorado looked poised to potential make a bowl in Sanders’ first year at the helm. But the Buffaloes lost the final six games of the regular season to fall to 4-8.

But with stars like quarterback Shedeur Sanders and defensive back/all-rounder Travis Hunter coming back, Colorado should be poised to improve on the Year 1 results. Whether or not they hit Kelce’s hefty prediction remains to be seen, but it would certainly be a bit of a surprise to see Colorado reel off an undefeated season in the first season back in the Big 12.

Sanders is high on his pair of star players going forward

Ever since taking over the Colorado job, Sanders has been the prince of promotion, able to take just about any opportunity and spin it into positive publicity for his team.

He did just that on the set of ESPN’s First Take on location at the site of this year’s Super Bowl, pointing out Colorado could have a serious NFL Draft haul next season.

“Did I say that we may have the first and second pick of next year’s draft?” Sanders asked the host of the show just before it cut to commercial break. “Did I say that? That plays for Colorado? Did I mention that? OK, I just wanted to mention that.”

Sanders was the star offensively, posting some monster numbers as he pretty much single-handedly willed Colorado to stay competitive in some of its closer contests. He emerged as a bona fide NFL Draft prospect but will remain in school for another season.

Sanders threw for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns, while throwing just three interceptions. He also ran for four scores.

But while he keyed the offense, Hunter helped power the defense from his cornerback spot. He racked up 30 tackles, 2.0 tackles for a loss, three interceptions and eight passes defended.

Somehow he was a force despite also being used extensively on the offensive side of the ball.

At receiver, Hunter was equally effective. He finished second on the team in receiving, catching 57 passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns as part of a well-rounded passing attack that put up plenty of points.
