Dan Hurley has taken the front seat on the coaching carousel with him thinking through his future with either UConn or the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, with a decision pending, we now know when one should be official.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Sunday that a decision between the Huskies and Lakers will come on Monday. The process has given him much to consider with both options but he should now have a choice to start this week.

“UConn coach Dan Hurley told ESPN that the Los Angeles Lakers made a ‘compelling case’ and presented a ‘compelling vision’ for him to become the franchise’s next coach but that he loves what he has built at two-time defending national champion UConn — and plans to make a decision on his future on Monday,” Wojnarowski wrote.

“In a phone interview on Sunday, Hurley told ESPN that he left ‘extremely impressed’ with Lakers VP and GM Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss and had been spending Sunday weighing what sources tell ESPN is a massive, long-term offer to move to the NBA,” reported Wojnarowski.

It came out last week that Hurley was a target for Los Angeles in their coaching search. He himself then reportedly confirmed those conversations with the Lakers with his Huskies.

With the timeline on this moving, Hurley ended up flying to Hollywood on Friday to meet with the franchise. That gave him the weekend to think this choice between college basketball or the pros over.

Hurley is one of the biggest names in coaching right now, especially after his recent work at Connecticut. In nearly a decade and a half at three programs, he has a college record of 292-163 (.642). That includes a mark of 141-58 in Storrs over the last six seasons.

The last pair of seasons, though, has taken his resumé to a new level. In ’22-’23 and ’23-’24, UConn has been 68-11 overall. They won the regular-season and conference tournament titles this last year in the Big East. They’ve also most notably gone back-to-back in the NCAA Tournament as the first consecutive champion in the sport since 2007.

That’s about all you can ask for from a coach at the college level. That has brought about the conversation surrounding Hurley’s apparent interest in eventually working a job at the professional level. It’s just a conversation if he should make the move now or put that off for more seasons at Connecticut.

Will it be the Huskies or will it be the Lakers for Hurley next season? That’s the question in front of him tonight and one that we should all know the answer to sometime tomorrow per Wojnarowski.
