UConn guard Ahmad Nowell has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He only spent one season with the Huskies.

Nowell appeared in 18 games for UConn this season but didn’t make any starts. He averaged 1.2 points, 0.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 6.5 minutes per game while shooting 35.7% from the field and 18.8% from beyond the arc.

Nowell had his best performance of the season in UConn’s blowout win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 30. In the win, he tallied a career-high five points and five rebounds in 17 minutes of action.

Nowell played high school basketball at Imhotep Charter (PA), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 37 overall player and No. 7 guard in the 2024 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Nowell is a winner. He won three state titles at Imhotep, claiming the PIAA Class 5A title in each of his final three years. For his efforts, he named the Class 5A Player of the Year and a First Team All-State selection his senior year.

“Ahmad Nowell is a connecting piece, someone that enhances the play of those around him,” On3 senior national recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw wrote about Nowell while he was still in high school. “He is a tough defender, where he uses his strong frame and long arms to guard on and off the ball.

“On offense, he moves the ball around unselfishly and knocks down open threes off the catch. His 6-foot-0 frame can cause struggles for him in the paint and he lacks a dynamic blow-by speed on the ball, he knows his game and plays within himself.”

Now, Nowell will look to reach his potential elsewhere. He is the second UConn player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. He is joined by freshman small forward Isaiah Abraham.

UConn posted a 24-11 overall record and a 14-6 mark in conference play this season. After defeating Oklahoma in the first round of NCAA Tournament, UConn fell 77-75 to 1-seed Florida in the Round of 32.

The loss on Sunday was UConn’s first in the NCAA Tournament since 2022. The Huskies won the last two national championships and had a chance to be the first team to three-peat since UCLA won seven in a row from 1967-73.
