UConn Huskies point guard Aidan Mahaney plans to enter the Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. This will be his second time transferring.

Mahaney was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, after playing his high school basketball at Campolindo in California. He was the 125th-ranked player overall and the 20th-ranked point guard in that recruiting cycle. Initially, he chose to attend Saint Mary’s ahead of offers from schools like Stanford, Cal, and San Francisco among others.

In two seasons at Saint Mary’s, Mahaney found plenty of success. There, he helped lead the Gaels to two WCC regular season championships and the 2024 WCC Tournament Championship. That also came with multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. He was also a two-time First Team All-WCC selection.

This season, at UConn, Mahaney appeared in 34 games and had five starts. None of those starts came since November in non-conference play and he would average 12.4 minutes played per game. That was significantly less playing time than he had at Saint Mary’s, where he started every game his sophomore season and averaged 33.3 minutes per game.

For his 2024-25 season with the Huskies, Mahaney averaged 4.5 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He did that while shooting 37.7 percent from the field, 35.9 percent from three-point range, and 75.8 percent from the free-throw line. A year prior, he had averaged 13.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. So, along with the drop-off in playing time, there was a drop-off in statistical production.

UConn had won two straight national championships before Aidan Mahaney transferred into the program. However, the Huskies weren’t quite as dominant in the 2024-25 season as they had been the past couple of seasons. Head coach Dan Hurley would lead UConn to a 24-11 record overall and a 14-6 record in Big East play. That was good for a third place finish in conference play.

The Huskies still made it to the NCAA Tournament. An eight-seed, UConn did manage to win a game before running into the Florida Gators. While UConn was able to give Florida a scare, the Huskies did end up coming two points short and fell in the Round of 32 in their attempt to three-peat.
