Coach K's grandson pleads guilty to DWI, gets 12 months probation
Michael Savarino, the grandson of recently retired long-time Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski and a former Blue Devil basketball player, has pleaded guilty to a DWI charge stemming from the fall of 2021. Savarino was sentenced to 12 months of probation and 24 hours of community service.
Court documents show Savarino has already completed the community service and attended a victim impact panel, according to WRAL.com. While Savarino’s DWI charge stands, two additional charges, underage driving after consuming and failure to yield to a stop sign or flashing red light, were both dismissed, according to the same report.
Savarino was 20 at the time of incident, and was pulled over driving the car of then-Duke star Paolo Banchero. Both have since moved on, as Banchero is now in the NBA, while Savarino has transferred to New York University.
