The Duke Blue Devils were struggling to get any offense going for much of the night in their ACC Tournament Semifinal matchup against the Miami Hurricanes. But in the bottom of the eighth inning, they got hot in a hurry, blasting two home runs. One of those was when Duke slugger Devin Obee sent an absolute nuke over the scoreboard in Truist Field.

The two-run blast put the Blue Devils up 6-2. Once the smoke had cleared in the eighth inning, Duke had put six runs on the scoreboard to give them an 8-2 advantage. That was the final score and the Blue Devils advanced to the 2024 ACC Tournament Championship Game. They’ll face off against Florida State on Sunday. That one is set for noon EST and will be nationally televised on ESPN2.

Slugger Alex Stone delivered the go-ahead two-run blast for Duke on Saturday night. With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Stone found freon coursing through his veins in crunch time. Shortly after his home run, Devin Obee launched his nuke into the Charlotte sky. Stone’s home run was the 40th of his career, putting him third on the Blue Devils all-time career homer list. The only players ahead of him are Nate Freiman (43) and Ryan Jackson (42).

Miami led 2-0 through the fifth inning, thanks to some stellar pitching by Herick Hernandez. He struck out nine batters through five innings of work, before eventually heading to the bench. He was able to keep the Duke bats off-balance and guessing for much of the game. But the Blue Devils went on to score eight unanswered runs, to punch their tickets to their second ACC Tournament title game appearance in school history.

Miami freshman Daniel Cuvet was one of the bright spots for the ‘Canes. He blasted a two-run home run, giving him 24 for the season. He shattered the freshman single-season home run record for Hurricanes’ baseball, surpassing Pat Burrell.

The start of Saturday night’s game was delayed an hour and 20 minutes due to lightning in the area. The original start time of the semifinal matchup was slated for 5:40 PM EST, but it didn’t start until 7:00 PM EST. Thankfully, the game was finished and there weren’t any further weather delays once the game started.
