WATCH: Duke freshman Dariq Whitehead attacks the rim with a thunderous slam

Duke basketball fans have been waiting for their superstar freshman Dariq Whitehead to have a breakout performance. Well, on Saturday afternoon against Maryland-Eastern Shore, the Blue Devil faithful got their wish, as Whitehead not only delivered a breakout performance, but he also finished it off with a spectacular highlight play. Whitehead capped it off with a rim-rattling dunk late in the second half, when he crossed up a defender and attacked the rim with authority.

Dariq Whitehead delivered a breakout performance

Whitehead poured in 15 points against Maryland Eastern Shore. He also grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists in the blowout victory. It’s the type of game that many people expected of the highly touted freshman.

It just took him a few games to finally breakout and flash his jaw-dropping potential. In the 2022 recruiting cycle, Whitehead was ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in America coming out of prestigious Montverde Academy (Montverde, Florida). According to the On3 Consensus Rankings, he was listed as a five-star prospect and the No. 1 small forward in America. In the past decade, Montverde has won the high school basketball national crown seven times. It’s considered the nation’s preeminent basketball factory.

Duke had no problems at all against the overmatched Hawks. The Blue Devils subbed in many of their bench warmers with just under two minutes left. Duke was up by 25 with less than two minutes remaining. The Blue Devils throttled the Hawks 82-55 on Saturday. The game was never remotely close, even with Jeremy Roach missing the game with a toe injury. Tyrese Proctor also poured in 15 points in the blowout for Duke.

The Blue Devils also got another excellent performance from Kyle Filipowksi, who has been downright dominant since the start of the season. He stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
