Jon Scheyer breaks down testing multiple lineups vs. Miami

Duke had a three-game winning streak snapped on Monday when it was humbled by Miami 81-59. None of the multiple lineups coach Jon Scheyer tried seemed to make much of a difference.
The Blue Devils just couldn’t get it going.
“As bad as we played, we were talking in the first half, just cut it to 10,” Scheyer explained. “Get it to 10 at halftime and we’ll regroup and recover. But we could never do that.”
On a short turnaround after an emotional weekend win over North Carolina, Duke just couldn’t seem to summon enough energy and emotion to get in the contest with Miami.
The Hurricanes took the lead early and never looked back.
All Scheyer could do was tinker with multiple lineups and hope that something snapped into place.
“Really we were just trying to get five guys out there that were clicking,” Scheyer said of his abnormal rotation. “We didn’t have that and we weren’t competing together. So you’re looking for whoever that is, whether it’s two bigs together; we looked at three guards at one point. Obviously you’re hoping something sticks at that time.”
Turnovers plagued Duke in Miami loss
One stat that really stood out on the stat sheet was turnovers. Duke turned it over 21 times in the loss.

“It starts with the turnovers. If you give any team, but a team as good as Miami, 21 turnovers for layups and dunks in transition? It’s gonna be a heck of a night for you,” Scheyer said. “Some of them were aggressive where they were in the passing lanes. But other times we just lost the ball. I mean literally just lost the ball. That’s gonna make it difficult.”
“Then you add in the offensive rebounds and second-chance points? Those are the two things against these guys that you have to do very well. And, obviously, we didn’t execute that.”
That’s not to say individual players didn’t have decent nights. But as a team, Duke did not fare well.
“Did think Ryan (Young) fought and competed. Dereck (Lively II) the same. And Dereck can guard, no problem. It’s not about that, it’s more about just on the offensive end. But again, it was too little, too late. But really we were just looking for a lineup that we could make a run at that thing.”
