The Duke Blue Devils cut down the nets on Saturday after beating the Virginia Cavaliers and winning the ACC Championship. Duke won by a final score of 59-49 in a low-scoring championship game, earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

After celebrating the win, coach Jon Scheyer finished the ceremonial cutting of the net by taking the last piece down.

The game became an intense one down the final stretch, while Duke star Kyle Filipowski continued his ACC Tournament dominance with a pair of huge plays with under ten minutes remaining in the game. After finding an open shooter for a three-point make out of a tough double team, he stole the ball and dunked in transition to make it 17 points on the night.

Filipowski finished with 20 points and ten rebounds, while Jeremy Roach added 23 points of his own.

Duke cuts nets down after ACC Championship

No team headed to Greensboro hotter than Duke, winning its final six games of the regular season. The goal was simple from the get-go — win the ACC Tournament and make an attempt to significantly improve NCAA Tournament seeding. The Blue Devils were able to do exactly, that, knocking Virginia off on Saturday night.

Duke winning the ACC Tournament is nothing new. They were able to secure recent titles in 2017 and 2019, doing so under Mike Krzyzewski. This is an unfamiliar feeling for Scheyer though, taking home a trophy during his first season in charge in Durham.

A quality achievement Jon Scheyer will have something to hang his hat on for some time. He will be looking for a national championship as well. And with how well Duke is playing at the moment, Scheyer will have his players believing they will be good enough to cut down the nets in Houston.
