The Duke Blue Devils made ACC history in Thursday night’s 2022 NBA Draft. They had five players selected, the first time any school from the conference has accomplished such a feat in the two-round draft era. Over the years, the Blue Devils have become one of the elite programs who consistently get their players to the next level. They’re only one of four programs with over 100 NBA Draft selections at 106 after Thursday. They produced 46 first rounders and 29 lottery picks during Coach K’s tenure there, more than any other coach or program in that span.

During the 2022 NBA Draft, they once again cranked out several top-notch draft prospects. Leading the way for Duke was Paolo Banchero who went No. 1 overall to the Orlando Magic. From there, Mark Williams went 15th to Charlotte, AJ Griffin went 16th to Atlanta, Wendell Moore went 26th to Dallas, and Trevor Keels went 42nd to New York. That quintet of Duke players broke or extended three records for the school and ACC.

After the Blue Devils accomplished more NBA Draft history on Thursday night, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer praised Coach K’s impressive draft resume and congratulated the Blue Devils’ first rounders. Check out the three-tweet thread he posted on his Twitter account on Sunday afternoon.

“73 Draft Picks. 43 First-Round Picks. 29 Lottery Picks. 4 #1 Overall Picks,” Scheyer wrote. “As I reflect on the NBA Draft, it’s another reminder of the incredible run that Coach K and Duke have had in helping young men reach their ultimate dream-hearing their names called on draft night,” he tweeted.

“It was an honor to be there in person to hear Paolo, Mark, AJ, Wendell, and Trevor’s names called. Each of them stepped on campus a year ago with a commitment to their teammates, their individual progress, and winning,” Scheyer wrote.

“As we start our first week of workouts with our team, I’m reminded that the legacy continues–in our values, our commitment to player development, and the unparalleled platform that Duke has to offer. #BrotherhoodForever,” the Duke head coach tweeted.

While all of that talent departed Durham in the 2022 NBA Draft, Scheyer has been busy using the lessons Coach K taught him over the past decade to replenish the pipeline of talent with some of the nation’s elite basketball stars. He reeled in the No. 1 recruiting class in America for the 2022 cycle, per the On3 Consensus, in his first season as head coach. While Duke has had multiple top-ranked classes over the last four decades, Scheyer’s first recruiting class might be the school’s most prolific.

Featuring three of the top five recruits in America, Dariq Whitehead (No. 1 overall), Dereck Lively II (2) and Kyle Filipowski (5) alongside three other four-star prospects – the Blue Devils are already one of the favorites to win the 2023 NCAA Championship despite losing the winningest coach in college basketball history. Now that Coach K is gone, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of success Scheyer has in the coming years.
