Jon Scheyer proud of Duke's complete effort in Virginia Tech win

Jon Scheyer watched his Duke team snag an important home win over the weekend Virginia Tech at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Behind a starting lineup that all finished in double figures, the Blue Devils claimed a 81-65 victory to continue its perfect run at home.

Scheyer said after the game that it was a complete effort from his team.

“I thought it was one of the best starts to finishes that we’ve had with probably just the edge that we played with on defense,” Scheyer said. “Individually, [Jeremy] Roach was on another level. He’s been playing that way, 19 and 10. But him and Tyrese [Proctor] in our backcourt, they each had a couple of turnovers late but besides that they played close to a perfect game. Their defense, they played both ends. I thought it was maybe Mark Mitchell‘s best game. I thought Mark gave us a huge boost really consistently throughout the whole game. We were able to avoid some foul trouble with Dereck [Lively] and [Kyle Filipowski] in that first half. Other guys stepped up and really just keeping our foot on the gas so proud of the effort, proud of the win and taking care of home court.”

Jon Scheyer says his Duke team knows what it takes to win

After picking up a win against NC State on Tuesday, Duke finished the regular season 16-0 at Cameron Indoor. However, the team is 6-8 outside of Cameron Indoor.

Despite that Scheyer said he believes the Blue Devils have an understanding of what it takes to win games.

“I don’t know if we are all of the way where we want to be, but we understand what it takes to win,” Scheyer said after the Virginia. “In the beginning of the year, the value of every possession, the value of talking on switches, making the right kick or the right read. They’re used to it being just them scoring is always the best play. Now, teams have game plans and I also think that’s a huge thing for freshmen to adjust to.

“As you get into ACC play, people have different game plans against you. I think that is absolutely true for our group. Where we are right now, we are connected. Even the assists, take out some of those turnovers last couple of minutes, we were well over 2-1 [assists to turnovers]. Our offense is pushing it more and flowing into things and that’s how I want to play.”
