Duke’s Jon Scheyer echoed the sentiment of college basketball fans around the nation, proclaiming his love for March and everything it brings to the sport.

The Blue Devils leader is readying his team to finish out the regular season strong, with the ACC Tournament and subsequent NCAA Tournament on the horizon. He recognizes how important it is to have their ducks in a row before the madness begins, and Duke is entering a pivotal stretch playing some of the best basketball in the entire sport.

After dismantling Wake Forest on Monday night by 33, Scheyer took some time to speak to the media about Duke’s mindset heading into the all-important month. It’s evident they’re not taking their position for granted, at 27-3 and atop the conference at the moment.

“It’s the best time of the year. It’s what you work the entire off season for,” Scheyer stated, regarding March and everything it brings to the sport of college basketball. “I think the thing about March too that I’ve learned is, you know, records don’t matter anymore. You’re not entitled to anything. Every game you play, somebody’s season has a potential to end. So, you’re playing and competing against teams that are very hungry.

“For us, like — that’s alright. Let’s beat people that really want to beat us, and they’re competitive. That’s what every game the rest of the year is going to be. So for us, it’s a blessing to be in this position. It’s the best time of year for me.”

All told, this season feels like it could be a special one for Scheyer’s bunch. He’s in his third season as the team’s head coach, and they’re primed to make a run at the whole shebang after coming up short these past two seasons. In 2023, they won the ACC Tournament, but they were eliminated in the Round of 32. Then, Duke fell short in their conference tournament in 2024, but they made the Elite Eight last season.

With only one game left in the regular season, the Blue Devils have only lost one conference game, and they’re in the middle of a seven-game hot streak. They’re also one of two teams to have dropped the Auburn Tigers this season. Suffice to say the sky is the limit for Scheyer’s team over the next few weeks.

Will they make good on their potential? That’s up to Jon Scheyer and his top players, like star forward Cooper Flagg. If they don’t at least make the Final Four, they run the risk of their season being labeled a disappointment, but we know Duke is aiming for it all over the next few weeks. We’ll see if they can stake their claim.
