Duke got walloped for the second time in three games as the Blue Devils dropped a second ACC road game on Wednesday night to NC State. The Wolfpack led by as much as 29 in Raleigh as they went on to win the game 84-60.

Now, after another disappointing performance for his team to truly open conference play, Jon Scheyer took all the blame. He said what Duke did just wasn’t good enough and, as head coach, that’s his responsibility. However, he needs his team to learn and learn quickly from this loss and how it took place.

“That was not a good enough performance or effort on our part. That’s on me,” said Scheyer. “Unfortunately, there’s some moments I’ve been through as a player and a coach where you have a night like this and it’s not okay. It’s not okay to have a night like this. And, for us to learn from it, we have to grow and change.”

NC State got off to a 15-0 start and never looked back again. Duke’s first basket didn’t come until the 12:20 mark of the first half and, by then, it was too little, too late. The Wolfpack put their foot on the gas and shot 47.1% from the field and 38.5% from deep on the night. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils shot just 39.6% from the field and paired that with 21 total turnovers on the road.

In the end, Scheyer continued to hold himself accountable for what happened with his team inside PNC Arena. Still, with a lot of ACC games left to play, he knows his team has time to take notes, learn from this, and bounce back as the season moves forward.

“I take responsibility for that as a coach. (It’s) disappointing. It’s a disappointing night,” Scheyer said. “(But) there’s 16 games left in the ACC. There’s a long way to go and we have to learn from this.”
