On Saturday, Jon Scheyer took on North Carolina for the first time as the head coach at Duke. Ultimately, the Blue Devils won a close game as they tried to avenge last season’s Final Four and regular-season finale losses.

After the game, Scheyer thanked the fans and students for their dedication during the North Carolina game.

“It’s special,” Job Scheyer said. “We talked about being in this together and I was a student here. I was a player here. So, for me, I have friends from Duke who are in the stands and just really thankful for them for their effort.”

Duke’s Cameron Crazies are known to be among the most passionate in all of college basketball, giving Duke one of the game’s best home-court advantages.

“I mean, they’ve slept in tents. They’ve been here all day. Been here all last night. And not just for this game, by the way. They’ve been showing up for every game and that means a lot to me. It means a lot to our guys,” Scheyer continued.

“And we want to win this for us, but us is also them.”

Duke’s next game is on Monday night against a tough Miami team. On top of that, the Blue Devils won’t have the Cameron Crazies at their back during the road game.

Jon Scheyer on the key to beating UNC

After the win, Jon Scheyer spoke about the keys to the game and how Duke beat North Carolina.

“It’s a little bit different. But um, I’m really proud of our team. You’ve got two guys behind you in [Dereck Lively II] and [Kyle Filipowski], and they made some big-time plays. I’m so proud of them, proud of our team, and really happy for them,” Scheyer said.

“You know what, Holly, I think Jeremy Roach has a lot to do with it. You know, down the stretch, we weren’t as sharp as I would’ve liked on offense…But the job that Jeremy did, not just scoring, but in key moments, was bigtime. So, I credit him.”
