In what was a special moment for the Wake Forest program under Steve Forbes, it quickly went south. As fans rushed onto the court to celebrate a season-defining win against Duke, Kyle Filipowski was injured amid the madness. His fellow Duke teammates then helped him off the floor, attempting to navigate through the crowd.

Head coach Jon Scheyer gave the initial injury update on Filipowski, saying the Duke star suffered a sprained ankle. A huge piece of news as the month of February winds down. Duke will now have to deal with an injury to its best players.

Scheyer also called for a change in college basketball and potentially getting rid of storming the court. Even back when he was a player, there was adequate time for opposing players, coaches, and staff so safely retreat to the locker room before fans could celebrate.

“Disappointed we lost,” Scheyer said. “But look, for me, I’m more concerned about the well-being of our guys. Flip sprains his ankle. When are we going to ban courtstorming? When are we going to ban that? How many times does a player have to get into something where they get punched or they get pushed or they get taunted right in their face? It’s a dangerous thing.

“I don’t want that to take away from the game that Wake played because Wake played a big-time game… When I played, at least it was 10 seconds and then you could storm the court. Now, it’s the buzzer doesn’t even go off and they’re running off the floor.”

Scheyer went on to mention the incident involving Iowa‘s Caitlin Clark earlier in the season. When Ohio State took down the Hawkeyes, fans in Columbus rushed onto the floor. Clark collided with one of them and thankfully came away without an injury.

Filipowski later told reporters that his knee is the problem, not the ankle. Either way, a scary moment for the Duke star after suffering a defeat.

Duke will thankfully have a couple of days off, not getting back on the court until Wednesday. Louisville will be coming to Cameron Indoor, a game the Blue Devils will be heavily favored in whether or not Filipowski is available.

An injury was the storyline down the stretch in 2024 for Filipowski. Unfortunately, the same is true heading into March but this one was an unforced error and Scheyer is quite frustrated.
