Kyle Filipowski is feeling better than ever and ready to lead the Duke Blue Devils to success next season.

Earlier in the offseason, Filipowski underwent hip surgery to clean up some injuries that were bothering him throughout his freshman season. While the Blue Devils star admitted it was his first time under the knife, he’s feeling ecstatic at the moment, and is ready to take on the rest of the college basketball world.

“It’s my first ever surgery,” stated Filipowski. “Rehabs actually been really good. You know, there’s — you know, our trainers have been doing so good. … I really am so happy with the decision, you know, I made, and the people that went into making that decision with me as well.

“You know I really, I feel like a regular human, with hips that can function good now. … I’m sure [Jon] Scheyer is looking forward to me playing some defense. … I can jump higher, hopefully.”

If Kyle Filipowski played the way he did last season not entirely healthy, a new and improved version will be almost impossible to stop. It’s going to be fun to watch him get to work over the 2023-2024 season.

“The biggest thing I probably took away for myself was just how I grew individually as like as a person and a player,” Kyle Filipowski said. “Just kind of stepping into the shoes that have been left for me to fill.”

It’s difficult for a freshman to succeed at a place like Duke. Expectations are massive, having decades of college basketball greats setting the standard before Filipowski got there. On top of that, this was head coach Jon Scheyer’s first season at Duke, adding to the challenges.

“I feel like I did a decent job of that and kind of grew into them pretty well.”

Kyle Filipowski added that he also made strides from his time in high school to his first year at Duke, explaining that he needed to be more dedicated to the team, turning basketball into his lifestyle.

In the end, Duke went 14-6 in ACC play before going on a run to win the ACC Tournament. In the process, they beat talented teams like Virginia and Miami. However, the Blue Devils were quickly eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, losing in the second round to Tennessee.
