Maliq Brown injury update: Jon Scheyer reveals concern over Duke forward
Maliq Brown, a forward for the Duke Blue Devils, has been a key player for one of the best teams in the country, especially on the defensive end of the floor. However, he ended up going down with an apparent knee injury in the first half of Duke’s win over Notre Dame on Saturday.
After the game, head coach Jon Scheyer shared that there is some legitimate concern for Maliq Brown and he is going to require more tests before they know the extent of the injury.
“I don’t [have an update],” Jon Scheyer said. “Maliq has proven to be one of our toughest guys, easily. The fact that he couldn’t go back into the game, I don’t think is a good sign. We’re gonna get imaging and get him looked at ASAP.”
Maliq Brown was able to play about a minute before he collided with teammate Mason Gillis. It seemed as though Brown took the worse of the collision and ended up limping off the court. He’d try to warm up for the second half but was unable to return to the game.
Earlier this season, Maliq Brown missed a non-conference game against Incarnate Word with a toe injury. However, he’s been good to go since then and this appears to be a separate issue.

“I didn’t see it, but something with his knee, where he bumped knees or something like that,” Scheyer said. “So, I’m concerned. I thought Pat [Ngongba] stepped up and gave us some really good moments. We believe in him. Maliq just provides such a different versatility with his defense. This is a game with Maliq and the switching, it’s calling his name. So, they went small in the game, which made it difficult for us matchup wise.”
Maliq Brown originally came to Duke as a transfer from Syracuse following the 2023-24 season. He had previously been a three-star recruit in the Class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He had been the 251st-ranked player nationally in that recruiting cycle.
In 15 games this season, Jon Scheyer has had Maliq Brown come off the bench as a sixth man. He is averaging 17.9 minutes played each game. During that time, he has been able to score 2.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. More important has been his defensive effort, where Brown has 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.
“We’re gonna him looked at, take care of him and we’ll see what the deal is,” Scheyer concluded.
