The Duke Blue Devils, and the college basketball world as a whole, are mourning the passing of Lefty Driesell.

The 92-years-old made his mark on the sport, and that’s putting it lightly. Driesell spent 41 years as a head college basketball coach, which included stints at Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and then GSU. He also played for the Blue Devils back in the 1950s during his own college days.

With the news hitting the airwaves, some of Duke’s fellow legends have made statements on the matter, including the man who was the face of the Blue Devils for longer than anyone in Mike Krzyzewski.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend Lefty Driesell,” Krzyzewski said. “He lit up every room he walked into, and I loved any time I was able to spend with him. As a coach, Lefty was the ultimate winner. He led some of the greatest players and teams in the storied history of the Atlantic Coast Conference while he was at Maryland. He and his late wife Joyce served as splendid examples for all of us and their impact on not only basketball, but everyone they touched, was immeasurable.

“While they are now both gone from this world, they forever remain. We wish the best to Lefty’s family as they mourn and celebrate a genuinely great man.”

As you can see, Krzyzewski had immense respect for Driesell. Current Blue Devils leader Jon Scheyer echoed that sentiment in his statement on the matter, as well.

“Today we mourn the loss of one of college basketball’s outstanding coaches and great men, Lefty Driesell,” Scheyer added. “While Lefty had successful coaching tenures at Davidson, Maryland, James Madison, and Georgia State, he remained loyal to Duke and was a cherished member of The Brotherhood. Over the years, I had the privilege of interacting with Lefty several times and he was always so down-to-earth and relatable. Any time with Lefty was thoroughly enjoyable. We were blessed he was with us for so long.

“On behalf of our program, we offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends he impacted so profoundly.”

As you can see, Lefty Driesell made an immense impact on Duke, and the men who have shaped where the program currently stands. The college basketball world’s thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the basketball legend on Saturday and moving forward.
