WATCH: Controversial replay leads to overtime between Duke, Virginia
The Duke Blue Devils and Virginia Cavaliers were battling it out in Charlottesville in John Paul Jones Arena. It was a hard-fought game on Saturday afternoon from both teams. The Blue Devils went cold for a really long stretch in the second half, which allowed the Cavaliers to make a run and even take the lead.
The game had its share of controversy, with the contest tied up at 58-58 in the final seconds, Duke’s Kyle Filipowski took the inbounds pass from Tyrese Proctor and drove to the hoop for a dunk, but the shot was blocked by Virginia’s Reece Beekman. However, referees called a foul initially on Virginia’s Ryan Dunn, who was also contesting the play from behind. Then they reviewed the foul and determined it came after the final buzzer. On the replay, it looked like he was fouled before the clock hit zero. However, referees called it a clean block until after the clock ran out, and the game went to overtime tied at 58-58.

Duke fans will be upset about this one for quite some time
It was a really close play, and the call could have gone either way. Duke fans will argue that Filipowski was fouled, whereas plenty of Virginia fans will likely argue that the block was clean. Regardless, there are plenty of members in the national media that said the overturn was a bad call, including Seth Davis, who said Filipowski clearly got fouled before the clock hit zero.

Others also weighed in, including former referees who broke down the different things the officials were looking for during the replay at the end of the half.
Virginia ended up winning the game in overtime 69-62, so the decision by the referees to overturn the foul proved costly for Duke. The Cavaliers will remain in first place in the ACC standings, but there’s no question they caught a good break on Saturday. The ACC released an apology for the mistake late on Saturday night, and gave a lengthy breakdown of what happened.
