Mike Krzyzewski is a legend – and there’s no arguing that. The longtime Duke head men’s basketball coach is in the final stages of an illustrious coaching career as the Blue Devils’ head man as he’ll retire at the end of the 2021-22 season, and his farewell tour has been a success.

While many people have been honoring Coach K in various ways throughout the season, many of his former players have been sharing stories from their days playing for him. As nearly all of them have said they enjoyed playing for Krzyzewski and learned a lot from him, some of the stories that have been shared aren’t all that pleasant – to the people on the outside, that is.

On a recent episode of The Old Man and the Three Podcast with former Duke standout JJ Redick, the former guard shared a story from a time when Coach K made a strong, vulgar comment to his players during a timeout in a game. As Redick points out that the Blue Devils were underperforming in the game, he recalls – and with a laugh – Krzyzewski telling them, “I hate your f****** faces,” during a timeout.

To follow up on the podcast, ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas – who played for Coach K at Duke from 1982-1986 – joined the Rich Eisen Show and pointed out that although the coach has made some strong comments over the years and has been tough on his players at times, all the players laugh about it all nowadays and people don’t need to take the comments the wrong way.

“That’s sort of the difficulty of this last season, if you want to call it a difficulty,” Bilas said. “On one hand, we are rightfully so throwing rose petals at Coach K’s feet, but when people tell stories about years ago or things that happened when times get tough, I think sometimes people can take the wrong thing from it. Coach K is an amazing competitor, and we have had really difficult times. He is not perfect, but he’s as close to perfect as a coach that I’ve ever seen.

“Some of these things being discussed – and especially the old-time stuff coming out – us as players get together and laugh about those things now, about stuff that he said or did. I, for one, love it, but you just don’t want people to take it the wrong way.”

Although Krzyzewski still has the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament to coach the Blue Devils in, he’s down to just four remaining regular season games as Duke’s head man. While the team will play three straight road games at Virginia (Feb. 23), Syracuse (Feb. 26) and Pitt (March 1), it’ll then close the regular season on Saturday, March 5 against rival North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium – meaning Coach K’s final regular season contest will be on his home floor.
