Report: Ray Lewis to present plan to be next FAU head coach, name to watch emerges
There were conflicting reports about Ray Lewis emerging as a head coaching candidate for Florida Atlantic and then FAU sources telling Yahoo Sports it wasn’t happening.
However, Lewis plans to present his ideas and overall plan for Florida Atlantic and pitch himself as the next head coach, according to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman. Lewis took after his close friend Deion Sanders.
That said, Lewis has no prior college coaching experience, unlike Coach Prime.
“This is the most interesting search going right now on the carousel,” Feldman said on Big Noon Kickoff. “Ray Lewis lives five minutes away from the campus. I’m told he really wants this job. He has seen what his buddy Deion Sanders has done and the splash he’s made in Boulder. He thinks he can make a similar impact at FAU. Now, unlike Deon, he has no college coaching experience, but I’m told he’s expected to present a plan to FAU leadership to try to make the case why you should get that job.”
For right now, Lewis will make his pitch but is not the favorite at this time. Feldman reported Ole Miss OC Charlie Weiss Jr. is likely to get a good look from the Owls.
“Now, at this time, a source involved in the search process said he is not a serious candidate. A name to watch in this job search, though, is Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss Jr. He’s only 31 but he’s done an amazing job. He’s actually the play caller for the Rebels, their number two offense in the country, used to be Lane Kiffin’s offensive coordinator in Boca Raton, did a really good job, a lot of the boosters really like him and he will also, I’m told, have Lane Kiffin’s support in getting this job. Lane has a lot of juice back in Boca.”

Major College Football Playoff implications
Lewis played in the NFL from 1996-2012, all with the Ravens, winning two championships and was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He played his college football at Miami, so he’s at least familiar with the Sunshine State.
This comes after FAU fired Tom Herman and it was reported that the former head coach had recently been in search of an offensive coordinator job somewhere in the Power Four per On3’s Pete Nakos.
Herman was previously a head coach for two seasons at Houston and four at Texas over the final half-decade in the 2020s. He went 54-22 in those other two stints to post a total record of 60-38 (.612) in leading those three programs.
