Florida right fielder Ashton Wilson had to leave Wednesday’s College World Series game against Texas A&M in the ninth inning. He ran into the wall at full speed and, after evaluation by the trainers, headed to the dugout with an injury.

Wilson emerged as a key piece for Florida toward the end of the regular season and had a strong start to the NCAA Tournament. He went 4-for-5 in the opening game against Nebraska, including a huge home run to seal the victory to kickstart the run to Omaha.

Ashton Wilson finished his season with a .292 batting average to go with two home runs and 16 RBI. He found himself in a starting role as the season winded down – his first after transferring in from Charleston Southern.

Wilson went 1-for-3 earlier Wednesday against Kentucky, but didn’t get a hit in the nightcap against Texas A&M. Florida’s season came to an end with a 6-0 loss to the Aggies, meaning the Gators finished with a 36-30 overall record.

Texas A&M took advantage after Florida found itself in a jam during the opening inning of Wednesday’s nightcap. Ted Burton was walked in the top of the first with the bases loaded to score the first run of the game while Cade Sorrell followed that up with an RBI sacrifice fly for the next out.

The 2-0 lead would stand until the fifth inning when Aggies slugger Gavin Grahovac belted a ball into the gap in deep center. The baseball would hop over the outfield for a ground-rule double, but not before it scored another Texas A&M run.

It wasn’t until the sixth inning that fans saw the first home run of the game for either squad. After a quiet few innings following the first-inning sac-fly, Sorrell got back into the mix — this time with the play of the game to that point. He launched a two-run home run over the fence to push the lead to five runs in favor of Texas A&M. The Aggies added one more run in the ninth inning before finishing off the Gators

As the Aggies’ bats were getting comfortable, Texas A&M had been just as successful on the defensive side of the ball as well. Aggies head coach Jim Schlossnagle opted to pitch Justin Lamkin during Wednesday night’s duel and was masterful on the mound for Texas A&M. He finished the game with nine strikeouts while allowing three hits.

The win pushes the Aggies forward into the national championship series in Omaha against a familiar opponent — Tennessee. They matched up one time this year, a matchup in the SEC Tournament that saw the Vols come away with a 7-4 victory.

The final series of the 2024 college baseball season begins on Saturday, June 20 with the first game set for a 7:30 p.m. ET start time. Game 1 of the best two-out-of-three series will air live on ESPN.
