This season, the Florida Gators open up with a road game against the Utah Utes. For head coach Billy Napier, one of the biggest questions going into that game is going to be how effective the Gators’ offense is against a tough Utah defense.

Ahead of that game, Napier wasn’t interested in giving specific details on how Florida plans on attacking Utah. However, he did say that each week has its own variables and it comes down to finding ways to create advantages for the offense.

“I think each week’s a different set of variables,” Billy Napier said during the SEC teleconference. “You’ve been training with your team, you’ve been working with your team. The combination of what you do well, relative to what you’ve been repping and what you have seen be successful in a practice setting, kind of building a toolbox, and then each week picking from concepts that maybe create advantages for your players and then you take the individual players that you have and you try to position them to touch the ball and have success.”

After having the incredibly talented Anthony Richardson at quarterback last season, this year Florida will play a veteran in Graham Mertz at quarterback. This Gators’ offense will likely go as far as he’s able to take it.

“So, you know, I mean, I think each week is a little bit different, but we’re gonna try to get the good players the ball and we’re gonna try to put our players in the advantageous situation. But I can’t emphasize enough Utah plays really good ball and we’ve got a ton of respect for them.”

Florida and Utah will get their seasons started in Salt Lake City on Thursday night.

Steve Spurrier praised the job Billy Napier has done at Florida

To this point, the overall record for Billy Napier at Florida hasn’t jumped off the page. Going into year two, he’s 6-7. Gators legend Steve Spurrier knows this isn’t good enough but did praise the job Napier has done and where the team is trending.

“I think he’s done a pretty good job. Obviously, 6-7 is not what we’re looking for. You know, if we’re heading in the right direction and recruiting seemed to be going very well, hopefully, if all the players that are committed sign,” Spurrier said.

“Obviously, that’s a sign of where your football program is, is the recruiting staying at a high level, and so forth.”
