Billy Napier makes joke about his wife when describing the performance of Anthony Richardson
It didn’t take long for Billy Napier to start waxing poetic about Anthony Richardson.
It’s Napier’s first season leading the Gators, and nothing smoothes the transition like having an amazing athlete like Richardson at quarterback. Speaking with the media following a 29-26 victory over No. 7 Utah, Napier made a joke about his wife when describing the performance of his quarterback.

“My wife can call plays with that guy at quarterback,” said Napier. “I mean, tonight there is at least four plays right off the top of my head where we’ve got a concept called, and he works his way through it and then you know, he just becomes that guy. So his legs are, they’re a difference maker, and you saw it tonight. The fourth down play on the last drive, I mean, there was multiple. The two point conversion, I mean come on.
“Let me tell you something, he did that exact same thing in practice one day. I’m talking about the exact scenario. So I think that we’re figuring out here that this guy is a pretty special player.”
Whether it’s a harmless joke, a subtle shot a former Florida coach Dan Mullen or simply praise for Anthony Richardson, it’s evident Billy Napier couldn’t be happier to have him leading the Gators.
More on Anthony Richardson, Florida Gators
Moreover, Anthony Richardson lended some credence to his Heisman and NFL Draft hype on Saturday. Getting the job done with both his arm and his legs, the electrifying quarterback led the Gators to their biggest win in quite some time.

En route to victory, Richardson passed for 168 yards, completing 17 of 24 pass attempts. However, he did the real damage with his legs, evoking memories of Tim Tebow and Cam Newton as he rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns on just eleven carries.
With Richardson leading the way, the Gators can beat anyone — as they proved on Saturday by defeating a College Football Playoff hopeful in Utah. Now, Florida has two tough SEC challenges over the next three weeks, facing Kentucky in Week 2 and Tennessee in Week 4. Both will present unique challenges, but both will be having to prepare for perhaps the best player on the field in Richardson.
As you can see, the Anthony Richardson experience is alive and well in Florida, only figuring to grow as the season goes on.
