Billy Napier on stakes in Florida vs. FSU: 'It's the most important game of the year'
Florida coach Billy Napier isn’t blind to the fact the rivalry game against Florida State is the biggest game of the year.
The Gators certainly turned it around during the second half of the season, but have to finish off on a high note. A 6-5, it’s not where Napier and Florida want to be.
But with a down on their luck FSU team on tap, a win to cement a better bowl game and positive vibes going into 2025 is much needed in Gainesville.
“I think that’s where you got to have good leadership at the player level, you know, where there’s collaboration,” Napier said. “Like I always ask some of our key guys, like, where are we at? You know? They’re the ones that have they know more than I know, or our staff knows so. So I think that’s going to be the key, because you do have to work your way through your punch list and do each day as if it’s the most important game of the year.
“I would say that it is the most important game of the year, not just because it’s the next one, but I do think there’s a ton at stake here. I think we have to realize all that comes with this game, big picture wise. And I think our players will. They’ll have a pulse on where we’re at and then we’ll adjust the sails each day of the week as we try to build momentum towards kicking it off up there.”

This is a big game for Napier personally. He has yet to beat Florida State, going 0-2 in his first two seasons.
Amid a five game losing streak to end the 2023 season. Florida lost to then No. 5 Florida State 25-14 and 45-38 on the road in 2022.
But this year, with Florida State 2-9, Florida is a big favorite. It’s been an utter collapse for the Seminoles this season, but Napier can only focus on what’s in front of him in his own house.
“Yeah, I mean, I have my own grass to mow,” Napier said. “My yard is big and it has got a lot of weeds in it, and, you know, I got my own issues. So, you know, I don’t necessarily think it would be right for me to comment on that, because, look, I understand all the things that come with the job. The job’s probably more challenging than it’s ever been. I have a ton of respect for Mike, I mean he’s a good football coach, you know, and I think we’re trying to get the Florida Gators better, you know, that’s my focus.”
