Billy Napier reacts to upset victory against Utah, expresses gratitude for Florida opportunity
The Billy Napier era at Florida got off to a successful start Saturday, as the Gators upset No. 7 Utah 29-26 in their season opener. In a sideline interview with ESPN postgame, Napier tried to put into words what this victory means for the start of his tenure in Gainesville.
“I’m so thankful for their work and so thankful for their trust,” the coach said. “That’s a strong word, but that’s what this game requires. Getting a leadership opportunity like this, you quickly realize how important it is to surround yourself with great people. That’s what we’ve got here. We’ve got a great administration, a great staff and an unbelievable group of players that has really worked hard and trusted us. I’m thankful for that.”

Florida did most of its damage on the ground, where the Gators compiled 283 yards and scored all four of their touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Anthony Richardson led the way with 106 yards and three scores, including the go-ahead touchdown with 1:25 remaining. Richardson also finished 17-of-24 passing for 168 yards through the air.
It was a performance to be proud of for the former backup in just his second career start, and Napier had a simple message on the play of his QB1.

“I think we’re figuring out here that this Anthony Richardson guy is pretty good,” Napier said.
Florida is coming off of a 6-7 record this past season, but it doesn’t look like the Gators will be in rebuilding mode for long under Billy Napier. The coach compiled a 40-12 record across four seasons at Louisiana before arriving in Gainesville, and Saturday’s result is sure to have many excited about not only the future, but this season as well.
Napier and the Gators will once again face a big test next Saturday, when they open SEC play at home against Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET.
