Billy Napier took over the Florida job this past offseason. When he did so, he inherited one of the game’s most interesting quarterback prospects in Anthony Richardson. After playing limited snaps in 2021, the hype around Richardson was unreal coming into the season. Then, in Week 1 against an excellent Utah team, Richardson showed why he deserved all of that hype.

In his weekly press conference, Billy Napier praised Anthony Richardson. In particular, for his decision-making against the Utes.

“I don’t think there was a play in the game where the guy did something that was–outside of the one 3rd and 10 where he was peddling and threw it into coverage–the decision-making was really good,” Billy Napier said.

“I thought a handful of plays, six or eight plays in the game, where we got some either ors where it was gray. Maybe we felt like afterward, you know, he’d have been better off doing something else,” Billy Napier continued.

“But, he understands what’s going on out there. He sees it well.”

Anthony Richardson went 17 for 24 throwing the ball for 168 yards. He also ran for 106 yards on 11 carries and had three touchdowns on the ground.

There was a lot to love for Billy Napier

Nobody was picking Florida to beat Utah. However, in a hard-fought game, the Gators managed to take the lead late and then hold on to win. In that game, there was plenty to love for Billy Napier.

“The great thing is the effort was there, the physicality was there, the toughness was there, the passion. I thought we saw some leadership emerge. But overall, lots of areas on our team where we need to improve. So, I think we’ve got a little bit of the best of both worlds here”

“I think we’ve got some momentum. But we also have a team that is very self-aware. I think we’ve got a smart group. I think they understand good football. They watched the tape. They know that they can do better.… A lot of good, a lot of bad, some ugly. We’ve got work to do here. But it’s good to be 1-0. We’re excited about getting back and starting SEC play here,” Billy Napier said.
