Brenton Cox addresses dismissal from Florida program, declares for NFL Draft
Florida dismissed Brenton Cox from the program on Monday, with coach Billy Napier confirming the program had parted ways with the talented pass-rusher following a 42-20 loss over the weekend to Georgia.
Cox spoke out for the first time Monday, tweeting a departing message to Florida fans.
“Being a part of this program and having the ability to wear the #1 Jersey was an honor and privilege,” Cox wrote. “I find it hard to express my disappointment in being dismissed from the team. It is truly a shock.
“I have always had a competitive spirit. I think sometimes that gets misconstrued. SEC football is a serious endeavor. There is a lot at stake for everyone involved. As I leave the program, I want the Gator faithful to know my goal every Saturday was to contribute to a winning effort and that my mindset has always been focused on making my team and teammates better.”
Cox initially transferred to Florida after spending one year at Georgia.
He had recorded 35 tackles, 8.0 tackles for a loss, 2.0 sacks, nine quarterback hurries and a pass breakup for the Gators so far this season. Brenton Cox’s dismissal came as a bit of a surprise Monday, though Cox expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by UF.
