Brenton Cox Jr.’s time with the Florida Gators has come to an end. According to Zach Abolverdi of Gators Online, Florida has dismissed Cox from the football program.

The dismissal of Cox is a notable one, as he is one of the top players on Florida’s defense. So far this season, he has totaled 35 tackles with eight tackles for loss, two sacks and one pass defended.

In three years at Florida, Cox has 118 tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks. The former Georgia transfer played his first season with the Gators in 2020.

As a freshman at Georgia, Cox had 20 tackles with two tackles for loss and a sack in 11 games. He immediately made an impact when he hit the field for the Gators, totaling 42 tackles with 10 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in 12 games. Cox then had a remarkable campaign in 2021, finishing the year with 41 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks in addition to a forced fumble.

Cox was named to the 2022 Preseason All-SEC Team prior to the start of this year, and he has certainly played well to this point. His loss is a major hit for the Florida defense, which has seen struggles already throughout the season.

Florida has seen mixed results this season in the first year under new head coach Billy Napier. The Gators started off the year with an impressive victory over Utah, a preseason top ten team. Florida then lost to Kentucky the following week before struggling at home against South Florida.

In their fourth game, the Gators battled hard against Tennessee and lost just 38-33. Florida rattled off two straight wins to reach 4-2, but two straight home losses at the hands of LSU and Georgia have the Gators sitting at 4-4 overall and 1-4 against SEC opponents.
