Dan Mullen makes interesting comment on Florida, if expectations have changed with Billy Napier retention
Dan Mullen is one of the more prominent voices in college football media. And he knows very well what the pressure cooker of expectations can be like with the Florida Gators. He teamed up with Urban Meyer to form one of the more dominant offenses in college football history during his time in Gainesville.
Paul Finebaum believes the expectations with the Florida Gators have been tempered a bit recently, with their decision to keep Billy Napier in Gainesville for another season. On the Paul Finebaum Show on Thursday evening, Dan Mullen shared his thoughts on the Gators and their current expectations for their football coaches.
“It seems that way. But you know what. I think the hard thing, that you look at all these schools. And I think there’s a lot of schools that go out there and they’re making these rash decisions. Right? And whether Florida made a rash decision. They may or not. I’ll let other people decide that. But I think you get in trouble if you do that,” Mullen explained.

“I think you have to sit there and look at what you’re building with the program. Look at how things are going. And don’t jump in. I mean, look, the issue might not just be the coach only in some of these situations. Dive in, do everything, and then have your expectations. And are you setting your program up as an administration? Or have you set your program up to be competitive to who you’re trying to hold them accountable to go against? And it’s really interesting. I tell ya,” Mullen continued.
“You have NIL out there. Everybody roots for the Pirates and the Tampa Bay Rays, it’s always nicer to be the Dodgers and the Yankees. And it’s not as surprising to see the Dodgers and Yankees play in a World Series when they have the highest payroll. Well, now you’re into payrolls of college football. Whatever school you’re at, if you’re not gonna match, if you’re not one of the top teams in your league. Well, hey, you can have a great year, but you might not compete. And you better understand all of the expectations that you’re looking at when you’re evaluating a program,” Mullen finished.
