Florida quarterback DJ Lagway has one particular area where he would like to improve heading into his second season as a starter. Speaking at SEC media days recently, Lagway explained that he wants to become more adept at reading defensive schemes.

“I’m definitely looking to improve on coverage recognition,” he said. “Knowing where the defense is gonna be and truly knowing their responsibilities and also knowing my teammates’ responsibilities better.”

Lagway took over as a starter for the Gators in the back half of last season after Graham Mertz went down with injury. He started in seven total contests to finish with 1,915 yards passing, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions on a 59.9% completion rate.

The former five-star recruit and No. 1 quarterback in the 2024 cycle now enters the season knowing the starting job is his. Players often make a big jump from their first to second year of college and he is hopeful he can do the same.

Florida is coming off of a 8-5 record this past season, matching its highest win total since 2020. The expectations in Gainesville continue to rise in part due to Lagway’s talent, but he is learning to embrace the pressure that comes with playing at a big time program.

“I always say pressure is a privilege,” Lagway said. “Once you have pressure, that means people are counting on you to do big things. So I’m always excited when people say pressure. You know, that’s why I just love the game day atmosphere, because that feels like all eyes are on you. And you gotta put on a show, you know? So that’s what I’m excited for.”

If DJ Lagway lives up to what is expected of him, Florida potentially has a chance to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2025. The Gators have a difficult schedule that includes Miami and Florida State in the nonconference in addition to a grueling SEC slate.

To get there, Lagway knows he’ll have to take a step forward as well as find even better rhythm with his teammates. But if you ask Florida head coach Billy Napier, his QB is ready for the challenge.

“Now, after the season and bowl game, you get a chance to regroup a little bit,” the coach explained. “So, obviously he’s very talented but to me we’re working on the skill level, fundamentals and techniques. We’re working on his knowledge and overall football IQ. I think one of the areas where he’s ahead of the game is as a competitor.”
