DJ Lagway injury update: Billy Napier shares encouraging update on Florida QB
In Florida‘s 34-20 loss to Georgia on Saturday, Gators quarterback DJ Lagway left the game on a cart after suffering an apparent leg injury in the first half. On Monday, Florida head coach Billy Napier provided an update on his freshman QB’s condition.
“The good news is we have positive information on that front,” Napier said. “We do think that the injury is less significant. We do think there’s a pathway for recovery and a return. We did find that out yesterday evening.
“He’s been doing well so far this morning, so we have not completely ruled him out, and I think a lot of that will be to be determined as we move our way throughout the week… I think that he, in particular, is a great competitor, and he wants to be loyal to his teammates and be available to do his part for the team.”
Before leaving the game, Lagway completed 2-of-his-6 pass attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown. He also recorded 18 rushing yards on four carries.
Lagway has been Florida’s starting quarterback since Graham Mertz sustained a season-ending injury against Tennessee on Oct. 12. In Week 8, Lagway led the Gators to an emphatic 48-20 triumph over Kentucky.

In the win, he completed 7-of-14 passes for 259 yards. His arm wasn’t his only weapon. Lagway also notched nine carries for 46 total yards against the Wildcats. After the game, Napier raved about the former five-star prospect’s performance.
“He’s improved fundamentally,” Napier said. “His football intelligence has improved. I think he’s become a really good communicator. And he has a knack. He’s a competitor. You got to be tough-minded. You got to be willing to continue to show up. I think he’s obviously done that. He’ll just keep getting better. I believe that.”
On Saturday, Florida will square off against Texas at noon ET. The game will air live on ABC. Napier believes DJ Lagway’s game status will become clear as the week progresses.
