There are massive expectations for Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway going into his sophomore season. However, injuries have hampered his offseason and led to some concern about his status moving forward.

Luckily, it appears that Lagway has taken a step in the right direction and has begun to throw the football. In a video posted to his Instagram story, Lagway has shared a video of himself throwing.

It is a controlled environment. Indoors, he isn’t wearing any equipment and isn’t facing any kind of defense. At the same time, with concerns that he wasn’t throwing thanks to a shoulder issue that Lagway has been dealing with, this is a major step forward.

Lagway has been dealing with injuries to his shoulder and lower body this offseason. Those became public this March when his participation was limited. Despite that and his lack of throwing this spring, he has done some work to keep active beyond just throwing.

DJ Lagway wasn’t able to compete in the Florida spring game thanks to his injuries. Still, even then, there were positive signs and head coach Billy Napier was happy with his progress at the time.

“We have no concern. We’ve dotted all the I’s and crossed all the T’s. We’ve been a little bit tight-lipped about it just in respect to the family and the way they want to handle it,” Napier said. “But in general, we have a really good plan, we’re working with exceptional people, and he’ll begin throwing here in a couple of weeks. Everything is on schedule. He’s in a great place. He’s been able to practice, he’s been able to stay connected with the team, and obviously, the return to play and the rehab part is going really well. We start OTAs the first week in June and he’ll be 100-percent by that point.”

Billy Napier made those comments earlier in April when speaking at the spring game. Now, with DJ Lagway throwing, it appears that he’s still on schedule in his rehab.

As a freshman, DJ Lagway shared time with the veteran Graham Mertz. However, once injuries ended Mertz’s season, he took over as the starting quarterback and threw for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 101 yards, but did miss the Texas game with an injury of his own that he suffered against Georgia.

Florida opens the 2025 season on August 30th against LIU. By then, DJ Lagway will be a sophomore and is expected to be healthy for the season.
