Gervon Dexter could be a name to watch for Florida football this season. Dexter played in all 11 games as a true freshman and should play an even bigger role in 2021.

The former five-star prospect and 247Sports No. 12 overall player in the class of 2020 received rave reviews from coach Dan Mullen recently.

“The one thing I like about Gervon is his maturity,” Mullen said. “Understanding, ‘Hey, I have these physical talents but I also need to play within the scheme. I have a job to do every single play and I’m gonna complete my assignment.’ He’s shown a great deal of maturity. That leads into leadership. He knows, ‘Hey, I’m not just this big guy out there running around trying to make plays. I’m trying to execute the defense.'”

Dexter finished last season with 19 total tackles (1.5 for loss) and one interception. Florida ranked ninth in the SEC, giving up an average of 428 yards per contest. The talented sophomore is not without competition on the defensive line.

The Gators brought in three transfers up front, Antonio Valentino from Penn State. Jeremiah Moon is also finally healthy after battling injuries throughout 2020. Still, of all these options Dexter might possess the most natural talent. At 6-foot-6, 308 pounds, he is a frightening physical presence for opposing offenses.

Florida’s defensive struggles were on full display last season. They gave up an average of 30.8 points per game — including 41 to Texas A&M, 52 to Alabama and 55 to Oklahoma.

There is clearly more to work on than the defensive line. The Gators also have questions at linebacker, where they will lean on Mo Diabate. Still if they hope to improve upon a lackluster 2020, the talented Dexter is sure to play a part.

Highly touted out of high school, it’s clear his has the skill. Paired with the maturity Mullen mentioned, Gervon Dexter could be the next big thing for the Florida defense.
