Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson showed off his athleticism as he left the field following Florida’s pregame warmups before Saturday’s game against South Florida. Richardson did a cartwheel followed by a backflip as he left warmups, which earned him some cheers from the Raymond James Stadium crowd.

Florida won its week one game against Florida Atlantic while USF lost to NC State 45-0.

Richardson had a strong Week 1 performance for Florida

While Emory Jones got the start against Florida Atlantic, it was Richardson that made headlines in the game. Richardson came in to spell Jones, and he completed three of his eight passes for 40 yards while rushing for 160 yards and a touchdown. Richardson is in his second-year freshman season, and getting him some game experience in the season opener could be valuable for his development.

“Anthony knows the offense,” Mullen said of Richardson. “It’s just getting the reps and the experience of the decision making and all of the reads and checks within the offense. If you watch the film, he made some spectacular plays but missed some simple checks within the gameplan. It’s just that comfort, and then the comfort of being able to execute it within a game. Obviously, you can make that time work however you need to make it work sometimes. But it’s the best when you get to let guys learn it the right way and build a really sold foundation.”

Jones has waited his turn to become Florida’s starting quarterback, but he saw struggles in week one. Richardson’s emergence could force head coach Dan Mullen into some tough decisions in the near future. Jones is in his fourth season with the program. In week one, Jones completed 17 of his 27 pass attempts with 113 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions along with 74 rushing yards.

Jones again got the start for Florida against USF on Saturday, but Richardson is likely to see the field at some point.
