Florida baseball freshman infielder John Martinez has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after just one year with the program, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

His decision comes just as the Gators advance out of the Stillwater Regional of the NCAA Tournament and will now go on to play in the super regional round with a chance to play in Omaha on the line.

In his rookie year, Martinez failed to really see the field and didn’t get an at bat all season long. Coming into college, the Florida Athletics website notes he was “ranked as the No. 30 shortstop in Florida” by Perfect Game. He also has a younger brother with the similar name of Jonathan.

Florida wins Stillwater Regional over Oklahoma State

After forcing a winner-take-all regional championship game with a win over Oklahoma State on Sunday night, the Florida Gators struck again on Monday. Defeating the Cowboys 4-2 to take home the Stillwater Regional title and advance to the Super Regional for a second straight season under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan.

It was a collective effort for the Gators once again, who used three different pitchers on the mound to help secure the win and generated offense from a multitude of players. Including Jac Caglianone, who spoke about the game about the significance of Florida’s big win after the game.

“I mean, it means everything. I mean, I feel like I shouldn’t be the one wearing this headset,” Caglianone said. ” Fisher JamesonJake ClementeFrank (Menendez), all these guys held their ground. We were asking for them to just go out and do their job and that’s exactly what they did. I’m just really grateful for this group of guys. Like you said ups and downs throughout the year, but honestly, none of that matters now in the postseason.”

The trio of Florida pitchers allowed just five hits on the day, striking out seven batters and allowing just two runs after holding Oklahoma State to two runs in their previous game on Sunday as well.

Florida will now look ahead to a matchup against Clemson, taking on the Tigers in a best two-of-three series in the Clemson Super Regional with the winner heading to the College World Series in Omaha. Of course, it would be another trip for Florida, who wound up in the championship series but fell to LSU last season.
