Florida baseball pulled off an unconventional win over South Carolina to advance to the second round of the SEC Tournament this week, taking a 2-1 victory on a dropped ball in the 10th inning. The pitcher’s duel finally broke open late in the game and finished with a sacrifice fly from Colby Halter to bring home Ty Evans.

South Carolina immediately challenged the play, but upon review the tag came in the same action that catcher Colin Burgess lost control of the ball and it fell out of his glove. The play effectively ends the Gamecocks’ season while Florida moves on to face Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament with an expected NCAA Tournament bid on the horizon as well.

Before heading to extra innings, Florida and South Carolina were led by their starting pitchers. Despite both earning no-decisions for the night, Brandon Sproat and Will Sanders both threw impressive games with a combined 17 strikeouts and one earned run between them.

SEC Tournament suffers major delays

The SEC Tournament got off to a rocky start on Tuesday morning when multiple rain delays pushed back the end of the 9:30 a.m. game between Alabama and Georgia. From there, another rain delay forced the first pitch between Florida and South Carlina to be pushed all the way back into the scheduled night session at 6:45 p.m. local time. With six hours in total rain delays, part of the schedule was changed.

As Ole Miss and Vanderbilt attempt to squeeze a third game into Day 1, with the potential of playing late into the night, one game must be pushed back to Wednesday. Auburn and Kentucky will play their elimination game in the morning to start tomorrow’s slate before the second round begins.

To accommodate the change, LSU will now remain idle until Thursday when they meet the winner of Auburn and Kentucky.
