Florida interim head coach Greg Knox reveals offensive playcaller for remainder of season
After a tumultuous season, Florida decided best to part ways with coach Dan Mullen. While his future replacement is uncertain, special teams coordinator/running backs coach Greg Knox will takeover in the interim.
Today, he revealed who the offensive play-caller will be for the remainder of the Gators’ season.
According to Knox, quarterbacks coach Garrick McGee will replace Mullen as the offensive play-caller.
It’s tough to argue with Knox’s choice, as McGee has a myriad of experience as an offensive coordinator. In the past, he’s held the position with Northwestern, Arkansas, Louisville and Illinois. Moreover, he joined Florida as an analyst in 2020 — promoted to quarterbacks coach this season.
It’s possible that Knox and McGee have one game to prove their mettle. With a chance at a bowl game on the line this weekend against Florida State, a victory could do a lot for the uncertain future of both men.

“A veteran of 20-plus seasons in the SEC, including four at Florida, Knox has previously also served as interim coach at Mississippi State in 2017, leading the Bulldogs to a 31-27 win over Louisville in the TayxSlayer Bowl,” the press release stated.
Knox has coached at Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Auburn in his 30-plus years in college football.
On Sunday, Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Thamel revealed the details of Dan Mullen’s buyout agreement at Florida. According to Thamel, Florida will pay Mullen $12 million in buyout fees, not including buyouts to his assistant coaches and support staff, making it an expensive overhaul for the Gators. Notably, that the sum would not have decreased if Florida fired him next season.
The future of the Florida Gators is uncertain. Still, a victory over Florida State never hurt the status of any coach in Gainesville — interim or not.
