An SEC Softball Tournament game between Florida and Kentucky on Thursday took a bit of a bizarre turn when a camera panned to two Gators players counting $100 bills in the dugout.

It was the top of the sixth inning, with the Gators leading the Wildcats 5-2, right after a Gators assistant headed to the mound to chat with pitcher Rylee Trlicek after she had issued a leadoff walk.

As the camera turned, even the ESPN broadcast crew seemed caught off guard.

“Stacking some Benjamins right there,” announcer Beth Mowins said, as another commentator made a comment about NIL.

After a few minutes of sleuthing, sideline reporter Holly Rowe provided more details.

“Well, you know I’m always about researching the money for you guys,” Rowe chimed in from off camera. “It is not real money. They do keep the stacks down here. And you get rewarded if you do something good in the game. I don’t know if it’s like an IOU so later when it’s legal you get the money… I’m kidding, I’m kidding.

“But no, it’s just kind of a fun little thing like, ‘Let’s reward you.’ I would take mine in candy over cash, but theirs is fun too.”

As the action centered back on the game, Mowins offered her thoughts on who was earning the biggest fake payday.

“Got to have the biggest stacks, Skylar (Wallace),” Mowins said.

Wallace is Florida’s starting shortstop and helped power the team to a 6-2 win over Kentucky in the opening game of the SEC Softball Tournament. She scored three runs and hit a sole home run, going 2-for-2 at the plate and drawing two walks.

“I just find a way to get on base, that’s what I’m really trying to do as a leadoff batter,” Wallace said on the SEC Network following the game. “Obviously can do the short ball down the line and a home run, but really just trying to get on base and trust my hitters behind me to get me in.”

She did just that on Thursday, and the rest of the Gators delivered.

After knocking off Kentucky in a game that was originally scheduled for Wednesday night but was delayed by weather, Florida will now advance to face top-seeded Tennessee.

That game is currently scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Friday, with a broadcast on the SEC Network, but SEC Softball Tournament times will be dependent on the weather.
