Florida fans will be waiting with bated breath after reports of a potentially serious injury emerged from the team’s second scrimmage, with running back Cam Carroll carted off.

According to On3’s Nick de la Torre, Carroll appeared to suffer a lower-body injury during the Friday afternoon scrimmage that required him to be carted off the field.

Carroll transferred to Florida this offseason from Tulane.

“For me entering the portal it was a well-thought-out decision,” Carroll said last week. “Once I entered, Coach (Jabbar) Juluke reached out to me. I sent him my transcript. I talked to Coach Napier and it felt like home. Being able to be in a room like Trevor (Etienne) and Montrell (Johnson) it obviously would scare a lot of people. But me personally I took it as an opportunity to not only learn from them but also grow.”

During five seasons at Tulane, Carroll accounted for 1,638 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns. He played in just one game in 2022, though, suffering a leg injury that prevented him from playing the rest of the way.

Still, he’s been a productive back across multiple seasons. He ran for 741 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2020 and also ran for 516 yards in 2021 and 364 yards in 2019.

He was expected to be involved in Florida’s rotation at running back, where the Gators are very deep. In fact, it was arguably the deepest position on the team prior to Carroll’s injury.

Etienne and Johnson are expected to star after serving as a quality one-two punch a year ago. While Johnson has more experience, Etienne might have more upside.

The brother of former Clemson and current Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, Etienne ran for 719 yards and six touchdowns last season for the Gators, averaging 6.1 yards per carry.

Johnson, meanwhile, ran for 841 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first season at Florida after transferring in from Louisiana. He was a star at Louisiana as a freshman, racking up 838 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021.

Florida did make a late addition to its roster in the running back room, signing JUCO running back Ja’Kobi Johnson in late May. So there’s additional depth behind Etienne and Johnson, as well. Still, Florida will be hoping the injury to Carroll isn’t a serious one.
