Florida's Tyler Shelnut ejected for holding bat too long after solo home run vs. Miami
No. 4 Florida got off to a fast start over in-state rival Miami on the road Sunday afternoon, leading 4-0 after a solo home run by senior Tyler Shelnut in the fourth inning.
It appeared to be a standard solo shot from the veteran outfielder. He was shown rounding second base, getting to third and meeting his teammates near the dugout after touching home plate. A whistle was heard as Shelnut went to the benches and to everyone’s confusion, including the commentary team, Shelnut was ejected from the game.
According to Gators Online’s Nick de la Torre, the explanation Gators boss Kevin O’Sullivan was given was that Shelnut was ejected from the game for holding onto his bat for too long. Upon replay, Shelnut flipped his bat before he reached first base.
Despite Shelnut’s ejection, the Gators have taken control of Sunday’s game, which serves as the final of a three-game series on the road.
Florida earned the win in game one 7-3, seeing true sophomore pitcher Cade Fisher putting on his best performance of the early season throwing 4.2 innings while striking out five while allowing three runs. Infielder Cade Kurland finished the night 3-5 with a home run and two RBI as the designated hitter after missing multiple games with a bone bruise.

Game two saw the Hurricanes beat up on the Gators’ youth pitching and stealing game two at home 10-6. They scored five of their runs off two hits. Freshman starter Liam Peterson got off to a rough start, but by the time the third inning hit, he retired the entire side in order. He ended up retiring 10 batters in a row before being relived by fellow freshman Like McNeillie in the sixth.
Peterson (1-1) was handed the first loss of his young career after giving up five earned runs. He gave up three hits, two walks but managed to strike out seven.
Now, the Gators are looking to close out the series on a high note and head back to Gainesville for a matchup against FAU on Tuesday, who has a win over Vanderbilt on the season. Before that, however, Florida has to take care of their road trip across the state. Florida will complete its in-state showcase against UCF the following day.
