The loss to the Tennessee Volunteers was a difficult one for the Florida Gators. Not only did Florida fall in overtime, but quarterback Graham Mertz was lost for the remainder of the season.

During an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show, Mertz shared his thoughts on the loss to Tennessee. There, he explained how frustrating the game and loss were thanks to what he felt were missed opportunities by the Gators.

“You go back and you watch the tape of that game,” Graham Mertz said. “The biggest thing you look at is missed opportunities of scoring. We’re moving the ball. We’re getting down in the red zone, but it just shows the importance of as the drives keep going, as the drives get longer, it’s about finishing them out and getting points.”

Florida finished the game against Tennessee with more yards on offense, outgaining the Volunteers 361 yards to 312 yards. That’s despite Mertz going down with his torn ACL during the game. Still, two failed fourth down conversions and two turnovers hurt the Gators’ offense throughout the game.

“So, it was definitely a frustrating loss. I think everybody in this locker room and this building was frustrated because we were just that close but I think it really tested what our team is made of, and I think we’ve got a group that’s hungry,” Mertz said. “They want to win. So, I enjoyed being able to sit back and watch practice. Seeing the energy guys are bringing and having fun out there during practice. So, it was definitely frustrating and we saw what we need to get better at and I think the guys did a great job this week of attacking that and working on it.”
