The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping that they have quarterback Tom Brady’s eventual successor in rookie Kyle Trask. Trask got his first NFL game experience on Saturday night, and Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians liked what he saw from the former Florida Gator.

The numbers don’t show it, but Arians thought that Trask played well on Saturday

Against the Bengals in Tampa Bay’s first game of the preseason, Trask completed four of his 15 pass attempts for 35 yards. That doesn’t look like the best line, but Arians thought that Trask made some nice throws and needs some more help from other offensive weapons.

“I thought Kyle played well,” Arians said after the game. “I thought he went in there and made some throws. Guys need to make plays for him. I like his poise and where he’s at.”

At Florida, Trask started in each of the previous two seasons. As a junior in 2019, he completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,941 yards, 29 total touchdowns and seven interceptions. Last season, Trask broke out, completing 68.9 percent of his passes for 4,283 yards, 46 total touchdowns and eight interceptions. His strong season allowed him to finish fourth in Heisman voting.

Tom Brady likes what he has seen out of Trask in Buccaneers camp

Earlier in the week, Brady spoke about Trask’s progress since joining the team. Tampa Bay selected Trask with the 64th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Nobody knows how long Brady will continue playing for, but having the ability to learn under him is experience that will prove to be valuable for Trask. Trask will have the opportunity to watch one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history before he is forced into game action with the Buccaneers.

“Kyle’s done a great job from the day that he got here,” Brady said. “He’s a very hard worker. Kyle’s out here early, stays late, works with the younger guys. All the things you’re really looking for in a young player. This has got to be a huge priority in your life if you want to be doing this job for a long time. You’ve got to make it a huge priority.

“You really don’t know what you don’t know at this point, when you’re one year in or two years in or three years in or five years in. As somebody who’s 22 years in, what I knew at five years in is very different than what I knew at 10. And very different than what I know now.”

Brady has won seven Super Bowls in his career. When he decides to hang up the cleats, Tampa Bay will need a successor. They are hoping that Trask can turn into the Buccaneers’ quarterback of the future, whenever that future arises.
