Steve Spurrier was more than impressed with Florida quarterback DJ Lagway during this past weekend’s victory for the Gators against the LSU Tigers.
Lagway helped lead Florida to an 11-point victory at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday afternoon, giving them Gators their fifth win of the season. He did most of his damage with his arm instead of his legs, passing for 226 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Afterwards, Spurrier waxed poetic about Lagway’s talent, and his ability to galvanize a team. He believes the sky is the limit for the Gators with their new signal-caller leading the way.
“He made two beautiful throws, and then [Jadan] Baugh, our running back, made the run that out the game away. So it was — yeah, DJ Lagway is a big-time talent,” Spurrier said, via Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “He’s such a good player, and a good guy. Players love playing for him. It’s going to be interesting this week. Ole Miss is, I guess, the highest-ranked team we’ve played since Georgia or whatever. So, we’re looking forward to trying to beat Ole Miss this week.”
It certainly wasn’t guaranteed that Lagway and the Gators would find success in 2024, and that wasn’t lost on his following the game. The quarterback believes he’s building something special with Billy Napier, and they’re laying the groundwork for a run in 2025.

“That means a lot, man, you know, just being the second year in the offense, you know, is huge,” Lagway said, following the game. “You know, just having the guys around it, rally behind that and like, truly, like, we’re gonna change this. And that’s the whole vibe in the locker room, that we’re gonna change this place, and we’re gonna make it what it used to be.
“From a recruiting standpoint, I feel like that was huge as well. You know, I had a lot of guys hit me up after they seen that, you know, texting me, trying to see, you know, what’s, what’s going on but yeah, it’s great.”
As Steve Spurrier alluded to, DJ Lagway and the Gators will welcome Ole Miss to town in Week 13. If Florida can knock off the Rebels, they’ll certainly prove that they’ve turned a corner under Billy Napier.
